Daniel Hale Williams was an African American surgeon. He lived from Jan 18, 1856 – August 4, 1931. He had a variety of careers before becoming a surgeon. Daniel H. Williams started working at the age of 17, initially starting out as a barber and bass violinist he later moved into law, but found the environment too combative. In 1878 he began his medical studies and received his M.D. from the Chicago Medical College in 1883.
